Feature: Summer Internship

In 2022, Isabel partnered with her alma mater St. John’s School’s (SJS) Alumni Internship Program to curate a three week summer internship program for two SJS seniors. Tasked with creating the program’s structure from scratch, Isabel met repeatedly with each intern to discover specific aspects of the performing arts industry that interested each of them and built research prompts and projects. Over the span of three weeks, she hosted daily intern meetings to explore the realities of the dance/performing arts world, connected each intern with various industry professionals (including performers, designers, and directors who participated in 15 intern-led interviews), hosted three-days of on-site shadowing at Dallas Black Dance Theatre, and coordinated a private meeting for her intern with a notable Artistic/Executive Director. The program culminated in final presentations showcasing their research and creative projects.

I could not be prouder of their work. Not only have I watched my interns light up throughout the process but I’ve also learned more about my multifaceted industry and reflected on my own place and growth. This journey and opportunity to reconnect with the SJS community years later in an unexpected way has been so fulfilling and a pleasant reminder that we are out here making it happen. Thanks for taking a chance on me and for trusting the collaboration.

In the site-specific, immersive performance, Isabel showcases a series of solos inspired by themes of African American identity, resilience, and culture—ideas existing in and around her, a biracial black American artist physically embedded in Cyrus’ exhibit.
